AI promises consumers a smart wardrobe

Original headline: “IA promete a consumidores um guarda-roupa inteligente

Valor Econômicooriginal in Portuguese
Janderson, our own portrait of him, not the photograph the outlet ran
Why it matters

One of the country's business dailies asked where AI is taking the way people dress, and interviewed Janderson as founder and product director of the company he built. “We went from a company that recommends a clothing size to one that helps the consumer get dressed,” he says in the piece.

What the piece carries

The story is a survey, not a profile. The paper went looking for where artificial intelligence is taking the way people dress, and put Janderson among the voices it interviewed, alongside a well funded Brazilian consumer app and Google's own virtual try-on. He speaks as founder and product director of the company he built.

He walks the paper through the arc: it started by inferring the right size from weight, height and age, moved on to suggesting similar pieces and whole outfits, and now lets someone see a product on their own body. He dates the acceleration to the union with Audaces two years earlier, which widened what the company could build. The scale he gives is roughly a thousand online stores across 56 countries.

On why try-on exists at all, he refuses the technology answer and gives the shopper's:

Try-on is born of a demand from consumers who want an experience closer to the physical store. Online, a person cannot put the garment on. Now they can see themselves wearing that product.

The part worth reading twice is about the photographs. Asked how the images are handled, he answers without hedging: the owner of the photo is the user, the image is processed and destroyed, the result goes back to the customer and nothing is stored. That is a product decision before it is a compliance one, and it is the same standard we hold agents to here.

Two notes on what is not on this page. The piece names the brands that license the technology, and we do not repeat them. And the photograph above is our own portrait of him, because the image the paper ran with the story is of a different entrepreneur it interviewed for the same piece.
